Guitar - Carlos Piñana

Carlos Piñana belongs to a family of great flamenco tradition. His first guitar teacher was his father Antonio Piñana, who introduced him into the world of Flamenco music.

Carlos studied classical guitar at the Cartagena Music Conservatory, and then at the Superior Conservatory of Murcia. After graduating, he devoted himself mainly to Flamenco music as a guitarist and composer.

Carlos is recognized as one of the best flamenco guitarist. When playing he combines a brilliant guitar technique with incredible expression. His performances, unique in Flamenco music, are full of outstanding virtuosity and a tone of rare beauty, and have enchanted audiences worldwide.

He has performed solo recitals and participated in different projects including classical music, jazz, dance and music of the world.

Carlos has composed many flamenco pieces and extraordinary projects such as: Symphonic Flamenco, Body&Souls, Misa Flamenca, among others.

Carlos is a master of improvisation. He presents it in instrumental pieces and when he accompanies singers. As a guitarist Carlos Piñana has a very personal style defined by precision, clear and pure sound, charisma and sensitivity. His extraordinary technique and musicality allow him to express the spirit of pure flamenco but also to look for new ways. He is an artist who brings a new perspective into Flamenco music.

Carlos Piñana has been awarded with many of the most important prizes in the world of Flamenco: First Prize and Bordón Minero at the international Festival of the Cantes Mineros (1996), the National Prize of Concert Guitar Ramon Montoya at the Cordoba Flamenco Art Festiwal (1998), First Prize Sabicas at the Calasparra’s National Festival of Young Flamencos, the Prize Importante’98 awarded by La Opinión de Murcia ewspaper. In 2001 the Emma Egea Foundation gave him the Alumbre 2001 Prize in recognition to his dedication and work.

He has taken part in several projects with musicians such as: Yungchen Lhamo (Tibet), Fathy Salama (Egypt), Estrella Morente, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Carles Benavent, Javier la Torre, Jorge Pardo, Naseer Shamma (Iraq), Miles Jay (U.S.A.), Said Chaibri (Morocco), Francoise Altan (Morocco), Aicha Redouane (Morocco), Ross Daly (Ireland), Ashraf Khan (Pakistan), Aytac Dogan (Turkey), Tommy Smith (Great Britain) among others …

He has also played with several Symphonic Orchestras: the Symphonic Orchestra (Murcia), the Philharmonic Orchestra (Lublin) , Beethoven Academy Orchestra (Krakow).

He has recorded six CD´s as a soloist : “ El Cuidado de Una Esencia” (1996), paying tribute to his grandfather, “Cal-libiri” (1999), “Palosanto" (2001), “Mundos Flamencos” (2003), Misa Flamenca” (2007), with his brother the singer Curro Piñana and “Mi Sonanta” (2009). He has composed the music for the film “Desnudos” from the director Juan Manuel Chumilla.
